Campus Planning and Construction has developed a
standard for interior signs used at the University. This
system meets requirements set forth in the American Disability
Act (ADA) of 1990. Below you will find information about the
standards along with how you will need to request new signage
for your department.
Standard Colors: There are six standard color
combinations that have been selected for the University. These
colors have been selected to create the 50% contrast required
by the ADA. If your building already has new signage
installed, you are required to use the existing color
combination. (Call 777-3501 for existing building color
combinations.) Color

Installation Standards:
Campus Planning and Construction has established a
sign mounting policy that is intended to cover most
foreseeable mounting conditions.
The basic rule for sign installation is to install the
ADA sign 2 from the door frame on the handle (strike)
side of the door five foot to the center of the sign.
Optional departmental or nameplates will then be mounted
1 below the initial room sign. This rule will satisfy
approximately 90% of the situations.
In the event that this basic installation is not
possible, the installer will use the following
principles to find the most appropriate location for the
room sign:
- Find the nearest visible wall space on the handle
side of the door. If a glass side light exist the sign
may be installed on the glass side light with a back
plate installed on the opposite glass side to cover
the double stick tape used for installation. Signs
should not be installed on doors.
- If a group of doors is arranged so closely
together that there is no suitable wall space
available nearby, then the sign may be placed outside
the vestibule leading to these doors. If there
are still questions about where signs need to go
contact the Office of Space Management.
- If a sign is to be placed beside a double door
with suitable wall space available on either side of
the door, then the sign will be placed on the first
side reached during clockwise way finding in the
building.
- If there is limited space available on the handle
side of the door, such that there is not enough room
to allow two inches of space between the frame and the
sign, then the two inches will be sacrificed in order
to install the sign.
- If the planned placement of the sign will cause a
problem because of unforeseeable aesthetic
considerations, (artwork or other complications) then
the installers will contact the Office of Space
Management to make an on site decision.
